I am under the absolute belief that one's ability to be liked is by far the most important secret to success in life and in the work place. Unless we are able to make friends or acquaintances, we create a grave disadvantage to ourselves and to our loved ones. I believe it is possible to cultivate through regular habits the personal quality of likability.
To begin, one must first make friends with him or herself. Imagine yourself as a good friend who is not you but possesses your similar history and personal qualities. By doing this you let go of your critical, self-centered bias and see your best self. Any past regrets or resentment must be forgiven as you begin to live one of the most important principles of goodness, self-love.
The next step is to develop confidence in one's self, which can be done in many ways. Make a list of your accomplishments and consider a time when some of those didn't seem possible. Look back over your experiences and consider how meeting people created experiences for you, good or bad, and how they have effected who you are now. Know with confidence that your future is shaped positively by your innate ability to make these kinds of connections going forward as your best self.
Lastly, one must actively develop proper interpersonal skills. One of the most important steps in interacting with other people is the willingness to respect them as you would want them to respect you. Basic common sense and your own requirements suggest being honest, considerate, and using proper eye contact. Honesty removes any pretense of self-doubt and will allow for sincere dialogue with the other person. Being considerate allows the other person to feel appreciated that they're spending their time with you. Lastly, eye contact is among the most determining factors of truth and possible likability. Most people will recognize that you are truly listening by maintaining attentive eye contact.
